The war affected Algona in a dual way. Not only did the community have a military installation, but also contributed 2,600 men and women from Kossuth County to military service. The presence of the camp made the local population aware of the war, but the absence of loved ones was the most poignant reminder. These men and women served in all branches of service, and 107 gave the ultimate sacrifice. This exhibit tells the remarkable story of their contributions to the war effort. This is our tribute to the 'greatest generation' who lived out President Roosevelt's prophecy that 'this generation of Americans has a rendezvous with destiny.'
